not.travis, the artist identity of Travis Haas McCann, works in painting, murals, sculpture and installation from Dallas. He is a co-founder, owner and creative director of Gallery DeFi and the founder of Cella. His demolished Deep Ellum mural, Heavy is the Head that Wears the Crown, remains documented as CELLA-30.
The work began with photographs painted over by hand. Acrylic, aerosol, collage and neon now run across canvas, found wood and walls.
On canvas and found surfaces, not.travis works through image and paint. The practice also makes sculpture with neon, objects and steel, then lets those forms grow to the scale of a room.
Two hearts of different sizes joined by a line. The not.hearts mark represents difference, connection and being in it together. It runs through paintings, neon, objects and entire rooms.
From Deep Ellum walls to the installation at The Crescent, not.travis has taken the work into exhibitions in Los Angeles, New York and Miami. In 2017, he led painting and mural workshops in Ghana with Beauty for Freedom.
Inquiriesnot.travis began working with Kyle Sauter in 2020, a collaboration that became part of the foundation for Gallery DeFi. More than 50 artists have contributed to the building at 2200 Evanston Avenue. not.travis is a co-founder, owner and creative director.
The Gallery DeFi role and artistsnot.travis founded Cella to keep a record of art in real places. The people who make, see and document it all contribute to culture. Visitors can mark that they were there and submit photographs or corrections for review. His demolished Deep Ellum mural remains as CELLA-30. Gallery DeFi is a working site for Cella’s artwork and exhibition tools.
